Align-Right Transfer System Procedure # 3040 and 3045
Swanson Regional Orthotic & Prosthetic Research Center has developed the
RapidFit Method to improve patient care for lower limb amputees.

RapidFit Overview

  1. Apply the suction liner to the residual limb.
  2. Screw the 2-piece Align-Right casting cylinder clockwise into the end of the suction locking liner.
  3. Make the cast of the patient's residual limb and reinforce around the casting cylinder with plaster bandage. Do not cover the distal end of the casting cylinder with plaster bandage so that a wrench or screwdriver may be used to unscrew it.
  4. After the cast has set, unscrew the Align-Right casting cylinder counter clockwise to release the casting cylinder from the suction liner.
  5. After the casting cylinder is unscrewed remove the cast from the patient's residual limb.

Filling the cast with molding plaster:

  1. Install the Align-Right fastener screw (6mm or 8 mm) in the end of the casting cylinder from the bottom to the inside of the cast.
  2. Apply an O ring over the fastener screw on the inside of the cast and push down until the O ring seals against the casting cylinder. Fill any void with fitting gel or putty to prevent plaster from leaking out when the cast is filled with plaster.
  3. Put reinforcing tape over the bottom of the fastener screw to ensure that plaster will not leak.
  4. Screw the Align-Right plastic anchor clockwise onto the fastener screw until the anchor is about a ½ inch from the bottom of the cast.
  5. Set the fill pipe to be in the cast about 1 inch from the top of the Align-Right plastic anchor.
  6. Mix the molding plaster with water and fill the cast. Return the fill pipe to the same position inside the cast and let the plaster set.
  7. Strip off the casting material once the molding plaster has set. Remove the fastener screw.
  8. Modify the cast of the residual limb for proper weight bearing.

To Fabricate a Thermoplastic Rapidfit Socket without a lock mechanism using the Align-Right Transfer System

  1. Apply a nylon to the plaster mold. Screw the fastener screw clockwise through the RapidFit Adapter and center hole threated plug.
  2. Apply the fastener screw through the distal end foam and screw clockwise into the plastic anchor inside the plaster mold. Tighten the fastener screw against the distal end foam until properly secured. Adjust the alignment of the RapidFit Adapter so that the four-hole pattern is in the line of progression.
  3. Fabricate the thermoplastic socket with the RapidFit Adapter.
  4. Remove the fastener screw and trim out the socket.

To Fabricate a Thermoplastic Rapidfit Socket with a lock mechanism using the Align-Right Transfer System:

  1. Apply a nylon to the plaster mold. Install the Rapidfit Adapter with the center plug through hole. Push the fastener screw through the fabrication block, RapidFit Adapter and lock mechanism.
  2. Apply the fastener screw through the hole in the distal end of the mold and screw clockwise into the plastic anchor inside the plaster mold. Tighten the fastener screw against the fabrication block on the RapidFit Adapter until properly secured.
  3. Adjust the alignment of the RapidFit Adapter and lock mechanism so that the four-hole pattern is in the line of progression.
  4. Fabricate the thermoplastic socket with the Rapidfit Adapter and lock mechanism.
  5. Remove the fastener screw and trim out the socket.

To Fabricate a Laminated Rapidfit Socket without lock mechanism using the Align-Right Transfer System

  1. Apply nylon to the plaster mold. Install a PVA separator bag. Apply a small piece of tape over the hole for the bolt on the distal end of the plaster mold. Punch a hole in the tape and PVA bag for the bolt. Install the RapidFit Adapter with the center hole threaded plug by screwing the fastener screw clockwise through the RapidFit Adapter with threaded plug.
  2. Apply the fastener screw through the hole in the distal end of the mold and screw clockwise into the plastic anchor inside the plaster mold. Tighten the fastener screw until the RapidFit Adapter is at the proper height above the mold. Allow enough room for the thickness of the lamination.
  3. Apply the lay-up under the RapidFit Adapter. Adjust the alignment of the RapidFit Adapter so that the four-hole pattern is in the line of progression. Apply the rest of the lay-up over the RapidFit Adapter. Apply the PVA bag and laminate the socket.
  4. Remove the fastener screw and trim out the socket.
